Preparing for a Safe Summer

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, vacations, and relaxation. However, with the warm weather also comes some safety concerns.

 As we enter the peak of hurricane season, it’s important to be aware of the potential threats from hurricanes. Other common threats can come from pop-up storms and severe weather but also from excessive heat as summer temperatures rise.

Below are some tips to stay safe when you are faced with these summer hazards.

Hurricane Threats:

Hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, with the peak occurring in late August through September. These powerful storms can bring devastating winds, heavy rain, and storm surges to coastal areas. Here are some steps to prepare for a hurricane.

1. Have a plan: It’s crucial to have a plan in place in case of a hurricane. Know where the evacuation routes are in your area and have a designated meeting place for your family. Have a plan for your pets as well.

2. Stock up on supplies: Have enough non-perishable food, water, and important medications for at least three days. Also, don’t forget to have flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit on hand.

3. Secure your home: Trim any trees or branches that could potentially fall on your house. Also, cover windows and doors with hurricane shutters or plywood to protect against strong winds.

Severe Weather Threats:

Summer is also a time when severe weather, such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning, can occur. Take these precautions to stay safe during severe weather.

1. Be aware of the forecast: Stay informed of the weather forecast and be on the lookout for severe weather warnings in your area.

2. Seek shelter: If there is a tornado warning in your area, seek shelter in a sturdy building or underground. In the case of lightning, it’s important to stay indoors or in a vehicle and avoid tall objects such as trees.

3. Stay away from flood waters: Floodwaters can be dangerous, and it’s best to stay away from them. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads, as it only takes 2 feet of water to sweep away most vehicles.

Heat Threats:

As the temperature rises during the summer, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses. Here are some ways to stay safe in the heat.

1. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential in hot weather. Avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks, as they can dehydrate you.

2. Dress appropriately: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in light colors to help you stay cool.

3. Limit your outdoor activities: Limit your time outside during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 am and 4 pm. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

4. Check on vulnerable individuals: Be sure to check on older adults, young children, and those with chronic illnesses or disabilities, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Be prepared for hurricanes, seek shelter during severe weather, and take precautions in the heat. Stay informed of weather forecasts and alerts and have a plan in place in case of an emergency. Remember, safety should always be a top priority during the summer months.
